Pot for Pets – Can Hemp Help Your Best Friend?

Pot for Pets – Can Hemp Help Your Best Friend?

If you came to this post, then you love your dog as much as your own child. Dogs are a unique animal, one that shares a symbiosis with humans, as Neil Degrass Tyson pointed out so elegantly in the first season of the reboot of Cosmos, originally hosted by Carl Segan.

Some dogs even look like their owners! If you’ve seen the memes of matching mustaches, scowls and smiles, you know exactly what we’re talking about. We have so much love for our pets and they for us. But like us, they get sick sometimes. They get old too. Watching your best friend get on in years is a painful experience any dog owner could tell you about.

But what if there was a way you could help your little super heroes when sickness and age strike that’s same and non-invasive?

Would you be surprised if cannabis oil made from hemp could help?

Before you jump the gun, it’s important to understand a few basics.

Now before you say yes, let’s be clear. It’s a really bad idea to pass a dooby to your Scooby. Although dogs have a similar endocannabinoid system to humans, they are hyper sensitive marijuanna and THC, and get quite sick when exposed to it.

Dr. Robert Silver, the world’s leading expert on hemp treatments in dogs, describes severe reactions that often lead to ER trips with dogs who are exposed to THC at even low doses. The reaction can range anywhere from allergy, to seizures. Not something we want our furry friends to experience, let alone the guilt we’d feel about accidentally causing it.

With that said, let’s turn our attention to hemp, and its active ingredient of interest – CBD.

Because our dog’s endocannabinoid system is so similar to our own, it means dogs benefit from much of the same effects CBD oils, topicals, and sprays as we humans do.

What are the benefits?

CBD products for pets can treat: anxiety, sleep disorder, pain, systemic inflammation, and even help treat cancer- just like products for humans can for us! And like us, dosage is just as important.

How much do I give my pet?

Studies have shown that a stable dose for dogs can be anywhere from 0.25mg to 0.5mg, once or twice per day – and even higher doses are safe! Although, they may not be necessary in all cases and may just end up wasting your CBD. Lab tests have shown that even a dosage 5 times that amount had mild to no adverse effects, depending on body weight. Diarrhea and a slight upregulation of a liver enzyme are the most common effects of “too much” that have been reported.

With that said, how do we go about giving it to our furry friends?

How to administer CBD to your pet

The truth is, although in the short term, oral sprays and oil drops are the most immediately active in the body from being so rapidly absorbed by the mucosal membranes, long term topical applications (creams and oils) are also quite effective, as over time the baseline of the treatments tend to all be equal in effect no matter how they are administered.
